What Is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine focuses on restoring and revitalizing damaged tissues by leveraging the body’s own healing capabilities. By using specialized treatments such as human cell and tissue biologics (HCTBs), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), exosomes, NAD+, peptides, growth factors, and specialized therapies, regenerative medicine offers powerful tools for pain relief, tissue repair, and inflammation reduction. This branch of medicine provides new options for individuals with chronic conditions, injuries, or age-related concerns. At LX Medical, our regenerative medicine services are tailored to support your wellness journey, enhancing both recovery and resilience.

How Does Regenerative Medicine Work?

Regenerative medicine works by utilizing the body’s inherent ability to heal. It employs treatments such as regenerative diet strategies, HCTBs, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), peptides and other cellular therapies that promote tissue repair and regeneration. HCTBs are potent stimulators of healing and help repair damaged tissues, while PRP, derived from your own blood, is rich in growth factors that accelerate healing via different pathways. Additionally, we have many advanced products, such as FDA approved peptides that support the healing environment, encouraging cellular repair and tissue regeneration.

At LX Medical, we are dedicated to using innovative treatments that maximize the body’s natural healing potential. Stem cells can be procured from multiple sources, including bone marrow, adipose tissue, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord tissue. Stem cells and other human cell and tissue biologics are remarkable undifferentiated cells with the potential to transform into various cell types. Recent studies are showing secondary effects of HCTBs are likely their strongest features that may enhance cell-cell signaling, modulation of the immune and inflammatory response, improve the growth of new blood vessels (called angiogenesis) and augment the healing environment. At LX Medical, we specialize in cutting-edge treatments that harness the healing properties of HCTBs and other regenerative therapeutics.
Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by all cells that facilitate communication between cells to aid in healing by regulating inflammation and repair signals. Exosomes are a newer therapeutic that can be given alone, or in conjunction with other therapeutics like HCTBs, peptides, and PRP, potentially enhancing their effect. Studies show that exosomes potentially benefit adults with musculoskeletal injuries, specific inflammatory conditions, individuals recovering from acute illnesses such as COVID-19, as well as those seeking to improve their immune systems.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a highly effective regenerative treatment that uses the healing components of your own blood to stimulate tissue regeneration. PRP is particularly beneficial in regenerative medicine because it contains growth factors that accelerate the body’s healing processes, making it a great option for treating injuries, reducing inflammation, and promoting overall tissue repair. This natural approach not only supports faster recovery but also enhances the body’s ability to heal itself without relying on synthetic medications or invasive procedures. PRP is used in various applications, including joint repair, hair restoration, and skin rejuvenation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see results?

Results vary, but most patients begin to notice improvements within a few weeks of treatment as their body heals naturally.

The number of sessions varies depending on the condition being treated. Some patients require a single session, while others may benefit from multiple treatments.

Coverage varies, but many regenerative medicine treatments are not covered by insurance. We offer various financing options to make treatments accessible.

Human cell and tissue biologics (HCTBs) have been shown to be safe in multiple peer-reviewed studies. Additionally, in our experience, we have not encountered any long-term negative side effects from using HCTBs.

Every case that utilizes HCTBs at LX Medical will undergo rigorous risk vs. benefit consultation with a trained medical professional. Studies have shown that HCTBs have hypoimmunologic properties, meaning they are less likely to trigger an immune response compared to other foreign cells. HCTBs derived from the sources we use are considered immuno-privileged, meaning they are not recognized as foreign by the body. Unlike treatments such as organ transplants, HCTB therapy does not require blood product use or HLA matching, making it a safe option.

Active Cancer: HCTBs can potentially help repair damaged cells and may differentiate into new cells. Because of this, we consider active cancer a contraindication to avoid any theoretical risk of HCTBs supporting cancer cell growth. Although more large-scale randomized clinical trials are needed, this precaution is taken for safety.

Previous Donor Tissue Recipients: While HCTBs are hypo-immunogenic, meaning they don’t typically trigger an immune response, some studies suggest that individuals who have previously reacted to donor tissue might have a similar reaction to HCTBs. Due to the lack of extensive trials confirming this, we consider this a contraindication in our practice.

Current Immunosuppressive Medications: HCTBs work by enhancing the immune system and reducing inflammation. If a patient is on immunosuppressive medications, these could reduce the effectiveness of MSC therapy or cause the stem cells to improperly interact with the immune system, making the treatment less effective.

At LX Medical, we carefully select our third-party vendors for human tissue and biologic products. We source our stem cells and exosomes from labs in the United States that are cGMP and AATB certified and fully FDA compliant. These labs are regulated under Section 361 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act and the regulations in 21 CFR 1271.

FDA Regulation: The products and therapies provided by LX Medical are sourced from FDA-compliant laboratories and are regulated under Section 361 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act. However, it is essential to note that these products are not classified as drugs or biologics under the FDA’s Section 351 and are not subject to the same approval processes as traditional pharmaceuticals. The use of HCTBs and exosomes in regenerative medicine is considered investigational, and these products have not been approved by the FDA for any specific disease or condition.

Treatment Outcomes: The efficacy of human tissue biologics can vary from patient to patient. While many individuals may experience significant benefits, others may see minimal or no improvement. There is no guarantee of specific results, and outcomes may depend on factors such as the patient’s overall health, the severity of the condition being treated, and individual biological responses.

Risks and Side Effects: Although HCTBs and exosomes are generally well-tolerated and have been shown to be safe in numerous studies, potential risks do exist. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Infection at the injection site
  • Immune reactions, although rare, especially in individuals with previous reactions to donor tissue
  • Theoretical risk of cancer cell stimulation, particularly in individuals with active cancer
  • Unintended tissue growth or differentiation

Contraindications: Certain conditions, such as active cancer, previous adverse reactions to donor tissue, and current use of immunosuppressive medications, may make the use of MSCs or exosomes inappropriate. Patients should discuss their full medical history with our clinical team to determine the suitability of these therapies.

Investigational Use: The therapies provided by LX Medical are considered investigational and are part of ongoing research in the field of regenerative medicine. While we strive to offer the most advanced treatments available, patients should be aware that these therapies are not a substitute for conventional medical treatment and should be considered as part of a comprehensive care plan.

Consultation and Informed Consent: Prior to receiving any treatment, patients will undergo a thorough consultation with one of our healthcare providers to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and limitations of human tissue biologics. Patients will be required to provide informed consent, acknowledging that they understand and accept the investigational nature of these therapies.

No Guarantee of Coverage: Many insurance providers do not cover treatments involving human tissue biologics, as they are considered experimental. Patients are responsible for all costs associated with these therapies and should verify their financial obligations prior to treatment.
