Weight loss can be complicated. For some people, they can exercise a few days per week, eat“healthy” and the weight just falls right off. For others, they are working out like crazy, eating minimally, and left wondering, “why can’t I lose weight”.
It doesn’t seem fair. What people fail to realize is that everyone’s metabolism is unique, and if they haven’t evaluated potential underlying health issues (insulin resistance, cortisol excess, hormonal deficiencies, poor gut health), weight loss will be extremely difficult and frustrating.
Here are a few general reasons why weight loss can be difficult.
- Unbalanced diet: Consuming too many calories/carbohydrates, particularly from
unhealthy sources like sugary drinks, processed foods, and high-fat snacks, can hinder
weight loss efforts. - Lack of correct physical activity: Not getting enough exercise can lead to a calorie
imbalance, but also not all exercise is equal for weight loss. Weight lifting/resistance
training will burn more calories and burn calories longer than cardio alone. High intensity
interval training (HIIT) for some may be great, for others it can lead to adrenal fatigue
and burn out. Making sure you are performing a combination of resistance
training/weight lifting, low intensity cardio and yoga/pilates is generally a good rule of
thumb. - Medical conditions: Conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome
(PCOS), and hormonal imbalances can affect metabolism and make it harder to lose
weight. - Medications: Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics,
corticosteroids and some contraceptives can cause weight gain or cause weight loss
more challenging. - Genetics: Genetic factors can influence a person’s metabolism, fat storage, and tendency
to gain weight, making weight loss more difficult for some individuals. - Emotional factors: Stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional factors can lead to
overeating or unhealthy eating habits, making it harder to lose weight. - Lack of sleep: Poor sleep habits can disrupt hormones that regulate appetite and
metabolism, leading to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. - Metabolic adaptation: As the body adjusts to a lower calorie intake during weight loss
efforts, metabolism may slow down, making further weight loss challenging. - Misinformation: Following fad diets or misinformation about nutrition and weight loss
can lead to ineffective or unsustainable approaches to losing weight.
