A summer later, Dahlien became only the second Minnesotan to pledge the Tar Heels since the turn of the century.
Maddie Dahlien went from unknown to undeniable.
As the U.S. women's national team seeks its third consecutive World Cup win, the roster again includes no Minnesota players. Legendary goalkeeper Brianna Scurry was the state's last representative, who earned 173 international caps from 1994-2008.
Dahlien, 18, is Minnesota's best candidate to snap that streak.
"Coming from Minnesota, coming from [a] really unknown soccer state has just pushed me to continue to work even harder," she said.
Dahlien spent the earlier parts of her summer with the under-20 national team in the Dominican Republic, where the U.S. lost to Mexico 2-1 in a tightly contested CONCACAF Women's Championship final. She started despite her youth, which was hardly recognizable when she scored a hat trick in her first-ever international start against Jamaica. Dahlien didn't play at all in the match prior.
She just waited for her opportunity to shine, as she's always done.
And to think, her name wasn't on the U-20 national team's radar until Nahas had a conversation with coach Tracey Kevins ahead of the last training camp for CONCACAF roster hopefuls. One of the sites just so happened to be hosted by North Carolina, a historic program that added an NCAA runner-up finish to its resume in Dahlien's first season.
She appeared in all 26 games and started five, with four goals and three assists as part of an All-ACC freshman campaign that also included the two goals she netted to secure a critical 3-2 win over BYU in the third round of the NCAA tournament.
"People get overlooked and people don't get seen and you never know how that goes," Nahas said. "But her talent and what she's done basically forced me to call to kind of recommend it."
Dahlien's four CONCACAF goals tied fellow Tar Heels teammate Ally Sentnor for the team lead, as she moved one mark closer to her dream of playing for the senior national team.
"It's just funny because I do think we have a lot of great soccer players in Minnesota," Dahlien said. "We're just kind of in no man's land."
But she got noticed, and the added Minnesota exposure reflected especially well on friend and former Edina and MTA teammate, Izzy Engle. After Engle committed to Notre Dame during a junior season in which she earned first-team All-Metro honors for the first time, she received one of 23 spring invites to a U-17 national team camp held in North Carolina. The news was announced on May 29, just a few weeks after Dahlien made the U-20 team.
"[Maddie] is the type that coaches are like, 'Oh, OK, here you are: Let's look at who else is behind you,'" Edina High School coach Katie Aafedt said.
Dahlien's rise at Edina, which also included sprint titles in track, led to her being named 2022 Star Tribune High School Female Athlete of the Year. Before she entered that brighter spotlight, she watched MTA standouts Sophia Boman and Kaitlyn MacBean achieve high-level success without much notoriety outside of Minnesota.
Boman, the 2019 Star Tribune Girls' All-Metro Player of the Year, has since been named a second-team All-Big Ten selection in two of her three seasons at the University of Minnesota. And MacBean made the All-Big Ten freshman team with Penn State this past season after a season-ending injury sidelined her in 2021. But neither has national team experience.
To this day, Dahlien wonders why.
How did she imagine more for herself amid such odds?
"The thing that's crazy about her career so far is she never thought she could play at North Carolina," said Matt Dahlien, Maddie's dad. "That wasn't on her list. Her list was to play college soccer."

One of her earliest goals was to make varsity as a freshman and score. She's come a long way since then, thanks to "a village" of support, as her mom, Allison Peterson, put it.
Exhibit A: Ahead of Dahlien's freshman year of high school, she left the much smaller Edina Soccer Club to join MTA — a move that longtime ESC and Wayzata High School coach Tony Pesznecker supported. It meant he would lose "possibly one of the best players that Minnesota has ever produced," but he knew she needed more to reach that level of recognition. MTA was the only Minnesota club that competed in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), which provided a launchpad for her recruitment to take off as a sophomore.
"I had coaches coming up to me in the middle of the game," said David Alberti, who coached Dahlien for three of her four MTA seasons. "... Through me, they could express their level of interest but it was insane. Absolutely insane."
Dahlien's play in that elite league didn't only alter her future in the eyes of top college programs. She started to see it, too.
"All of a sudden, North Carolina and Stanford and some Florida State coaches were writing her name down and this [other] coach that we know looked at his assistant and goes, 'Well, we just lost her,'" Matt said. "She'd always been this kid out of nowhere and then when that changed, her story changed in her mind."
Those at North Carolina fostered that narrative, just like alumnus Jena Kluegel told Dahlien they would in what she called a "fortuitous" conversation. Kluegel, a Mahtomedi native who notched 23 assists and three goals for the Tar Heels in 2000 as one of the nation's top midfielders, settled in Edina upon her return to Minnesota. There, the two were able to talk fit.
Once Dahlien arrived in Chapel Hill, there was no doubt. She belonged in Carolina blue.
"This is just the beginning for Maddie, and her success in the sport is something that we can all celebrate at home in Minnesota," said Kluegel, who went on to make 24 appearances with USWNT. "There will be some level of visibility to the state because of that. There has to be. She's earned that and she is a special talent."
North Carolina has a longstanding agility test that requires players to complete an M-shaped course lined by cones. No one in program history had broken 14 seconds.
Dahlien finished it in 13.81 seconds.
All Nahas could do was smile. He knew better than to expect anything less from the 18-year-old who appears primed to put Minnesota back on the USWNT board.
"I know now anytime a Minnesota team is out there from her club, I go to watch," Nahas said. "You just never know."

City elections staff members are looking for ways to cut back on their work in Edina, one of just a handful of Minnesota cities that hold an election every year.
City Council and mayoral elections in the west-metro suburb are held in even years; in odd years, the Edina school board contracts with the city to run school board elections. As election work has piled up, particularly since the pandemic popularized absentee voting, Edina Assistant City Manager Lisa Schaefer said the three people in the city clerk's office have less time for everything else they have to do.
"Over time, elections have been more difficult to absorb," Schaefer said.
Administering a primary and general election can take up to six months of near-complete focus from city staff members, Schaefer said, from preparing to mail ballots to calibrating voting machines and processing ballots when they return. Heightened security around voting equipment has made everything more time-consuming.
The Edina school district has contracted with the city to run its elections since the 1980s, Schaefer said. It made sense decades ago, she said, but the arrangement has chafed as elections take more time and resources to manage.
The school district gets billed for city staff time and other easily measured costs. But Schaefer said it's hard to account for the costs of office space, staff burnout and tasks that don't get done during election season, such as council business, responding to data requests and managing city records.
The contract caps the bill at $150,000, which Schaefer said was easily exceeded during the 2021 election.
Most Minnesota cities and school districts align their elections, so election workers run one primary and one general election every other year. According to the Secretary of State's office, only about one in every 10 cities and school districts have misaligned election years.
Out of about 300 school districts in Minnesota, Edina is one of 20 with odd-year elections while the city has elections in even years. Eleven other cities, including Minneapolis and Golden Valley, do the reverse: odd-year city elections and even-year school elections.
When city and school board elections don't happen in the same year, the work can add up. A few years ago, Edina's city election workers had to run five elections in two years: the 2019 school primary and general, the presidential primary and the 2020 state primary and general elections.
Eden Prairie recently switched its school board elections to even years to align with city elections and ease the burden on staff.
Another challenge in Edina is that city and school district boundaries don't neatly align. Only about 70% of the city of Edina is part of the Edina school district, while other portions of the city are part of the Hopkins and Richfield school districts. Hopkins has odd-year elections for both city and school board seats. Richfield, like Edina, has even-year city elections and odd-year school board races.
If it happens to coincide with another election, the Edina residents who live in the Edina school district just get school board races added to their ballot.
This fall's school board elections will be run as usual, but there could be changes in 2025. Unless the two sides come to a new agreement, either the school district will take responsibility for running school board elections, or the board elections will be shifted to an even year.

EDINA, Minn. -- On Sunday, dozens of radio controlled boats powered by batteries or sales hit the water in Edina.
"A sailboat on the south pond, it's serene and it's picturesque," said John Bertelsen.
Sailboats at Centennial Lakes Park have a capacity of zero.
"The set of the boat with the sails and everything, and technique, reading the winds and all that kind of business is exactly the same as a full size boat," said Bertelsen.
The Edina Model Yacht Club launched their annual parade of boats. Bertelsen has been around from the start in 1992.
"There are people we don't see on the water, they just enjoy building them. Some people just want to come out here and run 'em," said Bertelsen. "Coming out to enjoy the park, interact with the people, to have fun with the kids, it's a riot."
This weekend's event is the best chance to see a bunch of boats. But you can catch them throughout the season, too.
"One time some of the guys came out of there and told us how much they enjoyed watching the boats, and they bet on them," said Bertelsen. "They were betting on them and watching out the windows."

Solhem has changed and scaled back an affordable housing proposal in Edina, but now the project is in limbo as the developer awaits city approvals to secure financing.
Londonderry Apartments are proposed for 5780 Lincoln Drive if the Minneapolis-based developer can pull together financing and get through city entitlements. The proposal has 89 units of housing affordable to those making 50% of the area median income in a five-story tower.
A “sketch plan of financing” was discussed for the proposal at Edina’s June 8 Housing and Redevelopment Authority, where city leaders chose to table the discussion.
The approximately $37.9 million project will be financed with a first mortgage, deferred loans, low-income tax credits and other sources. Edina HRA was hesitant to offer a nod of support for financing the project before it even got site plan approvals. The developer would need $2.5 million from the city to make the project work.
“We don’t even know if we would even approve the project at the city council level. So if we don’t get the project approved at the city council, this is all a waste of time,” Mayor Jim Hovland said at the June 8 meeting.
Amol Dixit, with Solhem, told Edina HRA that Minnesota Housing Financing Agency would be unlikely to offer financing for the project without “some sort of soft commit” from the city. He added that Solhem is committing itself to the project and willing to increase the risk by expanding the amount of the deferred development fee. “Nobody is interested in being the first funder in … but MHFA needs to see some commitment,” he said.
He added that the team is looking to partner with the city and hoping the city will “lean in with us.” Without the soft commitment from the city, he thinks chances are slim Solhem would move forward at this time.
The city’s Affordable Housing Development Manager Stephanie Hawkinson said there are concerns about the project at its potential location, with public discussions centering on height and density. She said she can’t speak for the internal concerns of city leaders.
It would be the first fully affordable project discussed by city leaders since 4040 Flats was first proposed in October 2019.
The sketch for Solhem’s building consists of studios, one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units. Eighteen units will be set aside as supportive housing units, including some for people with disabilities or who have experienced long-term homelessness. Another five units will be affordable at 30% AMI.
The building would replace the aging Londonderry Office Park. The city has a goal of hitting 1,804 new affordable units by 2030.
It’s been scaled back since 2021, when Finance & Commerce reported that the building would be 195 units. At that time, it was market rate, but the developer pivoted to affordable to open avenues for infrastructure financing needed to improve sewer capacity on-site.
A special meeting of the HRA will be held Thursday to reassess whether the city would support funding the project and what the conditions would be. Depending on the outcome, Hawkinson said Solhem will have to decide whether it wants to move ahead on the project.

Robert Hoge Hamilton, age 78, born in DeWitt, NY, longtime resident of Edina, MN, and recent resident of Winsted, MN passed away March 29, 2023. We are deeply saddened by Bob's death from prostate and bone cancer. Bob is preceded in death by his sister, Sarah Lee, parents, Robert Cooley and Josephine Abigail Hamilton, and wife, Pamela Van Hove Hamilton.
Bob was a caring and optimistic man. He believed in people. In each of us, he found our best attributes, highlighted them and cheered us on. He was a proud and caring father and grandfather, and was quick to share positive stories about his family to all he met. He was driven by his ideas of how the world should be and worked hard to bring them to life (whether in business, home design, or planning family holidays). When we think of Bob, we remember his enthusiasm, his desire to treat people well, and his dignity.
Bob grew up as an only child in DeWitt, New York having lost his sister before he was born and persevered through the early loss of his father at age 17. His parents instilled in him the importance of family and friends, faith, education, and doing good for others. Bob took an active role in his church, working as a youth counselor and leader on a life changing trip around the world. In 1963, he enrolled in Wesleyan University majoring in Economics, and thereafter Syracuse University where he received a masters degree in Business. At Syracuse, Bob met Judy Snook, whom he married in 1969. His go-getter attitude landed him his first job at General Foods as product manager for Brim coffee based in White Plains, NY. In 1970, he and Judy had their first child, Chris.
In 1974, Bob followed his entrepreneurial spirit and moved to Edina, Minnesota to eventually start what would become a successful marketing strategy consulting firm, Core Group. Bob's second son, Hiram was born in 1975, and the business grew to 60+ employees over the next 20 years. Always the perpetual entrepreneur, Bob would later create multiple ventures including PowerTwo, a charitable giving start-up, and pursue his passion in home design and restoration. In the course of this journey, Bob met Pam Van Hove whom he married in 2011 and who would become the light of his later life. They created a beautiful home together in Winsted, MN and loved traveling to spend time with grandkids, nieces, nephews and family. No matter where Bob went or what he was working on, he had an incredible impact on the people around him. With Bob, anything was possible.
Survived by sons, Chris (Anna) Hamilton, Hiram (Medora Mrachek) Hamilton, and grandchildren Grace, Luke, Soren, Adelaide, Winslette, Sevilla, Emmeline, and Hawthorne. Funeral service to be held Friday April 28, 2023 at Christ Presbyterian Church at 10AM. Live webcast available at cpconline.org.
